Do you know God's intent for creation, relationships, and you? |
There is much confusion in our culture and world today regarding the purpose and reason for marriage. Today the institution of marriage has largely come to be regarded as an outdated and old-fashioned relic. Many people reject marriage as nothing more than a sure road to divorce. Many claim that marriage is “just a piece of paper,” irrelevant and unnecessary for people to be in love and form a family. Furthermore, our culture, and many others as well, have redefined marriage apart from the original design in the scriptures and in doing so have created a new “cultural marriage” that is in fact devoid of any of the meaning, dignity, and significance that God infused into marriage from the beginning.
Today we now have two extremely divergent definitions of marriage - who’s differences are utterly irreconcilable - cultural marriage and Biblical marriage.
In decoupling marriage from the scriptures and the divinely revealed purpose God gave humanity, we have also, by necessity, decoupled human identity from God’s revealed order and purpose. In alarmingly short order our culture now grapples with an identity crisis at some of the most elementary levels. We now struggle to be able to identify and bring any meaningful definition to the idea of male and female, the foundational roles of mother and father, and the gift of and sacred value of children beyond the elevation of happiness of parents. Unfortunately, this confusion has spawned generations of victims, and as usual the worst casualties are among children who have become commoditized by adults.
Today, the concept of covenantal life-long marriage is regarded by many as more akin to a fairytale and most likely the result of someone experiencing the loss of their own happiness at the expense and abuse of another. In short, the original and beautiful divine design for marriage has been jettisoned by the vast majority in our culture, and even by some within the Church.
We desperately need to rediscover the beautiful and precious work of art that God authored when He designed marriage and put it on display for the sake of the world.
