DELTA CHRISTIAN CHURCH
What does it mean that Jesus was the perfect Lamb of God? |
Every spring the Christian church commemorates and celebrates the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. These historical events serve as the very foundation of all that Christianity is founded upon - so much so that the Apostle Paul says that if Christ is not raised then all believers are to be pitied above all! (See 1 Corinthians 15:14-19)
Since John the Baptist, Jesus has been called the perfect Lamb of God, making reference to the Passover Lamb that was sacrificed each year by the Jews to commemorate their deliverance from Egyptian slavery. A regulation governing the selection of a lamb for use as a sacrifice was that it must be perfect, flawless, without fault.
Jesus entered Jerusalem some days before Passover presenting Himself as "The Lamb," the Messiah prophesied by the prophets going all the way back through Moses and beyond. In order for Jesus to be considered the perfect Lamb of God, He had to live a life of perfect obedience to the Law and fulfill every prophecy spoken of His life and ministry - including his suffering.
The Bible record makes it clear that in Jesus is fulfilled every law and prophesy concerning His coming and redemption of all mankind from sin. His life, death, and resurrection demonstrates completely that He truly is the Messiah, just as He said.
